Spider Veins are small thin veins lying close to the skin’s surface. They are ruptured or broken capillaries that leak blood which travels along the exterior of the surrounding capillaries. How Can I Recognize Spider Veins?  

Spider veins are red or blue in color and may appear like tree branches or spider webs with jagged lines branching out in different directions. Or, they may appear like: 1) a starburst, radiating out from a central point, 2) clusters of color that resemble a bruise, or 3) a group of fine lines that radiate out from a central area. What Causes Spider Veins?

• Genetics (inherited factors … having family members with
vein problems or being born with weak vein valves).

• Hormonal changes that occur during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause, and hormonal changes caused by taking birth control pills and other medicines containing estrogen and progesterone.

• Sun exposure … in some instances, sun causes spider veins to appear on the cheeks or nose of a fair-skinned person. Back to top
